AFI Dallas brings Hollywood mystique, film fan geeks to North Texas

The third annual AFI Dallas — American Film Institute’s International Film Festival — has swept down on Dallas with its gaggle of indie films, filmmakers and stars. The 2009 film festival runs through April 2, with a schedule that includes 173 feature films and shorts for industry insiders and movie buffs.

Presented by the Dallas Film Society, AFI Dallas will host 150 screenings at select theaters around town including AMC NorthPark 15, the Inwood Theater and the Magnolia Theater. The Nasher Sculpture Center will host a number of award presentations and filmmaker panels.

Victory Park serves as the epicenter for the festival, with screenings and red carpet entrances. Plus it will hold outdoor film screenings on its high definition “super-screens.”

Like any high-profile film fest, AFI Dallas will have its share of celebrity appearances during red carpet and question-and-answer panels, including Peter Bogdanovich, Adrien Brody, Robin Wright Penn, Andy Dick, Josh Ritter, Joaquim de Almeida and Patrick Warburton.

The AFI Dallas site lists all the films and events at the festival as well as ticket information. Tickets range from $5 for general screenings to festival passes that range in benefits and prices — all the way up to $700. You can buy passes and individual tickets over the phone and at the Dallas Morning News Box Office at Victory Park. For a list of venues and directions to them, click here.

Parking is free for most of the theater locations. Parking at Victory Park and at the Nasher can cost upwards of $10. Many of the venues will be served by the festival shuttle service.
